This is because of liberals’ distaste for decentralization of political power. According to Ford, they think that government should be heavily centralized and that states should have little power. This however, results in Federal involvement in small, local issues, which bogs down the system and makes government very inefficient. Ford says that “now that the republicans control Congress” (hahaha) Government is becoming very decentralized and the system is becoming filled with pork. Ford says that the reason many liberals don’t like state’s rights is because of their old association with Jim Crow laws and the South. Ford asserts that times have changed, and that state’s rights are no longer seen in the same light, resulting in liberal support for Federalism. Ford says that local governments can afford to be far more liberal than Congress. Ford concludes by saying that liberals should in fact support Federalism, as decentralization could actually be in their interests. Why we Care: This article shows an interesting perspective on devolution and decentralization of government, and how this is actually a prospective way to create a more liberal government. It also provides insight into liberal viewpoints on state’s rights and the history of their opposition to such. This explains how devolution is gaining more support and in fact becoming desirable to both conservatives and liberals
